Look out for signs of intoxication

The following behavioral patterns may be recognized as reasonable indications of excessive alcohol consumption:

  • Anti-social, loud, boisterous or disorderly conduct
  • Displays of aggression or physical violence
  • Loss/lack of coordination and unsteadiness on feet, falling down, bumping into fellow customers, furniture or fixtures
  • Decreased alertness, slurred or rambling speech, falling asleep or glazed eyes.

What is a standard drink?

Any alcoholic drink that contains 10 grams of alcohol is considered a standard drink:

  • 1 middy of full-strength beer (4.8 - 4.9%, 285ml)
  • 1 can of mid-strength beer (3.5%, 375ml)
  • 1 nip of spirits - e.g. gin and tonic, scotch and soda, brandy and dry (30ml)
  • 1 glass of red, white or sparkling wine (100ml) *
  • 1 glass of champagne (100ml)
  • 1 glass of fortified wine or port (60ml)

* A note for wine drinkers - while glass sizes vary according to individual outlets, often a wine glass will contain more than one standard drink. Please ask your wait/bar person for advice.
